Profitability Analysis (CO-PA) helps analyze profit and margin by market segments such as customer, product, channel, or region. In S/4HANA, the term Margin Analysis is used for the account-based approach. It works with financial accounts and journal entry items, preserving its relationship to the income statement. User interfaces and documentation may still use the former term account-based CO-PA.
In account-based Margin Analysis, costs and revenues are recorded on accounts and carry market segment characteristics. This helps align analysis with financial reporting. A segment characteristic can be directly assigned to a journal item or calculated as an attribute for analysis. SAP distinguishes journal items with a true profitability segment account assignment from attributed items, which appear in reports but do not themselves participate in account-assignment processes.
Costing-based CO-PA groups amounts using configurable value fields and may include planned valuation. It can run alongside Margin Analysis, but reconciling it with FI requires transforming accounts or cost elements into value fields. These approaches are not merely two screens over the same model; their data structures and reconciliation paths differ.
A profitability segment is a combination of characteristics, not a separate master data record. Values may come from a logistics document, manual assignment, or derivation rules. The result depends on the available characteristics, operating concern settings, derivation rules, substitutions, and the business process step.
Determining the segment early can reduce the amount of refinement at closing. However, a value added as a reporting attribute must be distinguished from a posting characteristic that supports allocation or settlement. At closing, characteristics may be refined through cost object settlement, allocation, or top-down distribution if the scenario supports it.
Compare margin using the same segment characteristics, ledger, period, currency, valuation version, and cost scope. Establish whether planned costing, cost of sales, allocated costs, and production variances are included. Determine whether an item has a true account assignment or an attributed characteristic.
If a margin report differs from FI, first classify the difference: CO-PA model, account/value field mapping, posting time, derivation, valuation, settlement, or filters. Do not change a value field until you know where the source amount was formed and how it reached the segment.
Record the S/4HANA edition, active CO-PA approach, and report context.
Record the operating concern, ledger, period, currency, and selected market segment characteristics.
For each material amount, identify the account, source document, and segment assignment type.
Check derivation or substitution and when it is applied; identify attributed items separately.
For costing-based analysis, check value fields and account/cost element transformation. For Margin Analysis, trace the financial item and any closing refinement.
